Commander's Comments

Greetings from Post 225

I hope this newsletter finds you all well. The spring rains are here! Lawns are almost instantly turning green, lake levels are going back up, and we have a new bounce in our step. Many things make this spring exciting, none more so than the Club remodel. As of this writing, things are progressing on time. If all continues to go well, by the time you read this, the main bar will be fully operational. The Building and Remodel Committee and chair Travis Dye deserve special recognition, as do our incredible staff. All of these wonderful and dedicated people, working together, allowed this to happen. The Wednesday work crew has done wonderful work. They deserve accolades too.

The Membership Meeting of April 15 included election of officers. Results are as follows: Commander - Pat Silovich, First Vice - Dean Londo, Second Vice - Travis Dye, Third Vice - Todd Paddock, Finance Officer - Ashley Venburg, and Sgt of Arms - Ken Kephart. Chaplain - Ron Miller, and Past Commander - Paul Siebert are returning.

Recent events included the Future Farmers of America Banquet, March 21, at the high school.
The annual Easter Brunch and Vietnam Veteran’s Day program was March 31. Donny Skow, Terry Larson and Mary Jo York attended Veteran’s Day on the Hill April 17.

There are a number of events coming up in rapid fire. We will be hosting the Forest Lake Lake Association Annual Social, April 17, A Tasting for Wildlife fundraiser, April 19, a Soft Opening for the new bar, April 21, Grand Opening / Ribbon Cutting, April 25, and the Fireman’s Ball, April 27.

It is our turn to host Memorial Day (we alternate with the VFW) on May 27. Through all this, planning is well under way for the 4th of July. The next meeting is scheduled for April 18.

As a separate line item, Baseball Tryouts will be open to the public this year, April 28th from 11:00am - 2:00pm at the Forest Lake Middle School. For the 2024 Senior American Legion season, those born on or after January 1, 2005 - including previously rostered high school graduates - are eligible to compete.

Our membership goal of 594 was reached last month with current membership at 654. That ranks us as the fifth largest post in Minnesota!

Our Post will be hosting a blood drive May 5. Please consider donating as blood is always in short supply.

Working together, we continue to build our future.

Until we all meet again, stay healthy, stay positive and take care of one another.

Pat Silovich

Building Restoration Project (BRP) Update April 20, 2024

The past 10 weeks have been exciting and busy! We are pleased to announce that phase 1 of the Building Restoration Project is coming to a close. The new main bar area will open to the public on Monday, April 22, 2024. Our Grand Opening Ceremony will be held April 25, at 5 PM.

Thank you for your patience and support, and thank you to everyone who helped in completing this project.

MEMBERSHIP!!!!

Our membership goal of 594 was reached last month with current membership at 654. That ranks us as the fifth largest post in Minnesota!

The multi-year membership is now available for all members that have already renewed for 2024 (as of Dec 4).  I highly encourage any member that has paid their 2024 dues as of Dec 4, 2023, to take advantage of this program.  You can pay now for 2025, 2026 and 2027 at the current dues rate and not be subject to the dues increase coming in July for those three years.

In order to participate, you need to renew your membership online at mylegion.org/renew.  You will need your email address and membership ID# to register.  Anyone needing help I am in the Legion office Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 1100 till 1600.

Anyone interested in helping during our remodel we have members who meet Wednesdays between 9AM and 4PM. Anyone with IT experience would be helpful.

Auxiliary News

Welcome to Spring and to Forest Lake Auxiliary Happenings!

Our April 15, 2024 Auxiliary 6:30 PM Meeting had 22 members present. Our elections were held with the following members elected: President - Cavalene (Kandy) Regan, 1st Vice President - Cheri Santanni, 2nd Vice President -Cherie Peterson, Treasurer - Laureen Frost, Sargent-at –Arms - Sue Bock, 1st and 2nd Members-At-Large for the Executive Committee -“ T” Jotblad and Sherri Hernandez. As Past President I will also be on the Executive Committee. All elected officers’ will take their place at the August 19th meeting. My position at the August 19th meeting will be to pass the gavel to President Cavalene and I will take a seat with the rest of the members. As President, Kandy will do an awesome job (as she did before) leading the Auxiliary forward.

Discussion on our annual Garage Sale - Thursday, May 23 – 9 AM to 7 PM, Friday, May 24 – 9 AM to 7 PM, and Saturday May 25 – 8 AM to noon. Donations will be accepted Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22 from 10 AM to 7 PM. If you would like to volunteer during any of the dates or times please call the Legion on Tuesdays or Fridays 9 to 10 AM (this is coffee time for members) and ask to speak to an Auxiliary member. Or just stop in during the listed times.

“Poppy Day” Auxiliary members will be at Cub Foods, Bruce’s Foods (Wyoming), Wal-Mart (Forest Lake), and Mikes Bait Shop (Hwy 8) on Friday May 17th, from 8 AM to 7 PM and Saturday 8 AM to noon handing out Poppies. Monetary donations are always appreciated. Again if you would like to donate some time to this project please reach out to an Auxiliary member. All members will be receiving a Poppy card in the monthly newsletter.

We got a sneak preview of the 4th of July button. They will be ready for public sale the end of this month or by the time you receive this newsletter.

Attention “Shop til you Drop’’ crafters the date for this year’s Auxiliary fundraiser has been changed to the second Saturday in December. Save the date: December 14th, 2024.

We will again provide a meal to veterans, their families June 14, at the Vets Camp.

We are still making bags and collecting items/snacks to put into the bags for the Veterans Family Space at the airport. They will be provided to the veterans/families to help preoccupy their time while they are there.

The project collecting Chemo Radiation kits for cancer patients for the VA hospital will be ready when the construction is complete. We are hoping the container will be in the hall sometime in May.

Hope you were able attend the April 17th “Veterans Day on the Hill”

Greetings to all

It's poppy time again but this year is a little different. The poppies are in short supply so there is no poppy enclosed. Instead of a poppy we are enclosing a card designed by an Auxiliary member. This card is to remind everyone that the poppy donations are used exclusively for the Veterans programs that we support.

We are very grateful for any donations that you send to us. You all have been very generous over the years and we are very grateful. Thank you and have a great summer.

Poppy Chairman
